For three generations, Idylwilde Farms has been bringing customers fresh produce and gourmet food items. Currently run by the Napoli brothers—Thomas, Richard, and David—Idylwilde’s roots first began when their grandparents, Frank and Mary Napoli, emigrated from Italy in 1898. The current property, located just 30 miles outside of Boston, has been serving the community of Acton, Massachusetts, since 1969.
What is it that keeps customers coming back for generations? We spoke with Jean Oosterman, who’s been the buyer for Idylwilde for 24 years, about what makes the farm so special to her and to the community.
Can you tell us a bit about what types of products Idylwilde offers?
Idylwilde is a specialty farm market carrying the finest domestic and imported produce and gourmet food items. We sell our own homegrown produce in season from the 50-acre farm Idylwilde sits on. We also carry meats, dairy, cheeses, wine, and craft beer. We have an extensive greenhouse with indoor potted plants and fresh cut flowers, pottery, gifts, and greeting cards.
What do you hope people will experience as they browse the aisles?
My hope is for our customers to find unique items they may not find elsewhere. It could be a specialty food item, the perfect gift, or even a bouquet of fresh cut flowers for themselves. In a world where most everything can be delivered to your door, we want Idylwilde to be a place to continue to come back to for generations.
Is your store involved with any community organizations or events?
Idylwilde is involved in donating to the food pantry which provides food to residents in need in Acton and surrounding towns. We also contribute to the Lion's Club which provides support to many local charitable organizations and community efforts.
As you think about the magic of the holidays, what do you hope your store can offer more of in the world?
I hope Idylwilde can bring out the holiday spirit to all who come to see us. Idylwilde is magical, especially at the holidays with the Christmas trees lined up outside and carefully decorated wreaths. The greenhouse is filled with poinsettias, amaryllis, and beautiful cut flowers and seasonal arrangements.
What do you hope to bring to your community through your presence?
Idylwilde is a family-owned, third-generation business. Several of our employees have been here for more than 20 years. There is a feel of family as we know so many customers by their first name and have watched their children grow and become parents. We hope families will come for generations to experience Idylwilde.
