8 Creative Ideas to Weave Reading into Your Routine

Untitled design (53)

There’s nothing quite like getting lost in a good book where you can hardly wait to turn the page and learn what happens next. Books are our portals to new worlds and broader horizons—where the impossible is possible, where we find comfort in a happy ending, where we fall in love with the thoughts and words of beloved characters, and where we feel their impact long after the last page.

August 9 is National Book Lovers Day and we’re celebrating by sharing some ideas to help you incorporate reading into your daily life.

  1. Head to your local library and get a library card. The library is an incredible place to connect with other people in your community, find a breadth of information about any topic you’re interested in, explore books from new genres and authors—and the best part is it’s all FREE!
  2. Put away your phone before bed. No scrolling on TikTok, Instagram, or Facebook (we know it’s tempting!). Instead, choose a book. Studies show that the blue light from devices like smartphones and tablets impedes our ability to relax and sleep. If you need help falling asleep, try reading a few chapters in a book before bed to help your mind ease into rest.
  3. Join a local book club or create one with your friends. It’s a fun and meaningful way to stay motivated to read, connect with others, and spark thoughtful conversations about the stories that move us.
  4. Start a reading journal. Capture your thoughts and feelings while you’re reading a book and reflect on the ending after you’ve finished it. Once you’ve completed the journal, it’ll create a fun little time capsule of memories.
  5. Read to your child before bed. It’s so beneficial for kids to grow up with a love for reading and setting aside time each night to share a story with them gives you both something to look forward to during the day. It can also be a soothing routine for children who have anxiety around bedtime. Looking for more books to add to your child’s library? Discover our illustrated children’s books.
  6. Host a book exchange. Trade books with friends or family members and debrief about the endings once you’ve finished them. This is another great way to read new books without spending any money! It can also help you break out of your comfort zone to explore new genres you may not have tried otherwise.
  7. Explore new reading spots! On warmer days, bring your book to an outdoor patio, a local park, or picnic spot. In colder months, sit in a cozy café while sipping on something warm. No matter the season, a good book is a great companion.
  8. Get social! Join a social media site like Goodreads to leave reviews on books you just read and connect with other people who have similar reading tastes.

We hope that these ideas stir some of your own and inspire you to pick up a new book and start reading! Stories truly enrich our hearts and our minds, and we relish any chance to sing their praises, including National Book Lovers Day!
